We’re covered in it, but do you know anything about it? Here are 4 facts about our skin that you may be surprised to learn, and may even make you appreciate your skin a little more!
Your skin is the largest organ of the body – When we think of organs, we may typically think of our heart or lungs… but in fact, the skin is the largest organ of the human body. With that in mind, just as we make conscious efforts to do right by our organs, such as eating heart healthy foods or choosing not to smoke for the sake of our lungs, we should make an effort to care for our skin!
Your skin is your biggest protector – Without skin, we wouldn’t exist! The skin protects internal organs from injury and infection. Keratin, in the outer layer of cells, stops harmful germs from invading the body. Skin’s elasticity withstands physical pressure and helps us reduce injuries. Think of it as your knight in shining armor.
Your skin around your eye is as thin as a sheet of paper – One of the reasons why we always refer to the eye area as delicate is because this is the thinnest layer of skin on our body. This thinness causes signs of aging to evolve more quickly than other areas, so treating this area with an anti-aging eye cream or eye gel is key to help prevent wrinkles from forming.
In one square inch of your skin there are…. 9,500,00 cells, 19,500 sensory cells, 1,300 nerve endings, 650 sweat glands, 78 sensory apparatus for heat and 13 for cold, 100 sebaceous glands, 78 yards of nerves, 65 hairs and 19 yards of blood vessels. THAT’S ONLY 1 SQUARE INCH!
